Regulations and Licensures – Tennessee

Excerpt from the state regulations:

RULES OF TENNESSEE MEDICAL LABORATORY BOARD CHAPTER 1200-6-1s
GENERAL RULES GOVERNING MEDICAL LABORATORY PERSONNEL

(d) An individual may be issued a special analyst license to perform tests in only a limited range (as listed in the license) if the procedure(s) for which licensure is being sought is a new, emerging technology in the clinical laboratory or represents a subspecialty not otherwise regulated. The procedure(s) must not be a component of the traditional clinical laboratory science body of knowledge contained in chemistry, hematology, microbiology or immunohematology; and
  1. The individual must be certified by a national certification body, approved by the Board, where such certification or qualification exists and must possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university relevant to the subspecialty in which licensure is being sought, or…

Note that American Society for Clinical Pathology introduced its MP (molecular pathology) certification examination in 2003. Since then, only 259 individuals have achieved this certification as of June 2008.
