Regulations and Licensures – Maryland – CMS(CLIA)

Excerpt from regulations:

CLIA ’88 §493.1489 describes the qualifications for testing personnel performing high complexity testing:1
(a) Possess a current license issued by the State in which the laboratory is located, if such licensing is required; and (b) Meet one of the following requirements…

Cytotechnologists who meet these qualifications, therefore, may perform high complexity testing (e.g., HPV).

States that require licensure of medical technologists, however, may exclude cytotechnologists from performing such tasks if excluded from scope of practice for cytotechnologists.

Noteworthy states include: California, Florida, Tennessee, and New York.
